First graduating class
All San Miguel seniors eyeing college
San Miguel High School in Tucson will graduate its first class this month and all 37 in the class will not only graduate but go on to college.
Most of San Miguel’s seniors will be the first in their families to attend college.
The seniors graduate in May, and each has received acceptance letters from colleges and universities around the country. Additionally, these “at risk” students have been awarded nearly $1.5 million in scholarship funds. More scholarship award announcements arrive every day.
“Boston University and the University of San Diego have awarded three of our seniors ‘full-ride’ four-year scholarships,” said school president Elizabeth Goettl. “We are so proud of these students.”
“I am overwhelmed and overjoyed at these numbers,” said Brother John Hoover, FSC, San Miguel’s college counselor. “I don’t know if any other high school in Pima County can say that all of their senior class students have college acceptance letters. And to have these scholarship awards on top of that is fabulous.”
Acceptance letters have been received from 27 colleges, including the University of San Diego, PolyTech University in Florida, St. Mary’s Notre Dame, Fordham University and St. Mary’s Moraga in California, as well as the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, Eastern Arizona College and Pima Community College. Many of the seniors will be able to choose from among several acceptance letters.
San Miguel fills a unique niche in Arizona, existing solely to provide access to quality college and professional career education for children from families of limited financial means.
College and career preparatory programs are offered in the 325-year-old Lasallian tradition.
San Miguel is part of the Cristo Rey Network of 19 high schools nationwide, all of which serve low to moderate income families, making this 21st century educational program affordable through a unique work-study model. All students in all grades work one day a week at local businesses, and those business partners provide tuition support and internship jobs.
In addition, students earn need-based and achievement-based scholarships while their families pay what they can within their financial means.
San Miguel’s graduation ceremonies will be held on May 17.
San Miguel is accepting applications for the fall of 2008. To find out if it might be the right high school for your child, visit www.sanmiguelhigh.org or call 520-294-6403.
