St. Augustine Catholic High School students perform service projects on, off campus

Posted on by Admin

Saint Augustine Catholic High School students experienced a valuable lesson in becoming “leaders in excellence” recently by participating in service projects both on campus and off.
In celebration of the Feast Day of St. Augustine, every student and teacher participated as they were ushered out of the doors after Mass, many still humming the final chorus of the concluding song, “Go Make a Difference.”
Freshmen were assigned to the campus while the upperclassmen headed off to diocesan grade schools including St. Joseph, St. Cyril, Our Mother of Sorrows and Santa Cruz. Those who remained either made sandwiches, cleaned closets, set up the gym for lunch, illustrated posters outlining the learning outcomes, or wrote letters to soldiers.
Several parents also assisted in working side by side with the students, including Mary DeBolt, who transported the sandwiches to Casa Maria. “I delivered around 500 sandwiches,” she said. “We also delivered enough peanut butter, bologna, cheese, and condiments for at least 100 more. They were very grateful for the food and labor. Casa Maria distributes about 1,200 sandwiches a day so what we provided took care of their need for half a day.”
The students who went to the grade schools assisted in classrooms, where they read to preschoolers, worked math problems with kindergartners and first graders, and did a variety of other projects with students in the elementary grades. Another group made rosaries with a woman’s group at Our Mother of Sorrows.
Following their morning of service, students gathered in the gym to a lunch lovingly prepared by the Corpus Christi Knights of Columbus.
Then, dressed in their spirit shirts, each class presented their “cheer” while a panel of judges offered points, and students participated in games ranging from a skittle search to an egg-evasion relay.
