Ignatian Retreat set for Oct. 12-14

Posted on by Admin

The sixth annual Ignatian Silent Retreat will be held at the Redemptorist Renewal Center (Picture Rocks) on the weekend of Oct. 12-14. The retreat begins in the evening of Friday and ends after lunch on Sunday.
This year will feature the leadership of Father Joseph Tetlow, a Jesuit priest who is highly renowned as a spiritual director, author and teacher. He will lead participants in bringing to the Lord their thoughts, decisions and questions about the interplay of their public life as citizens and the teaching of the Church.
Called by Scripture and Tradition to respect the teaching authority of the Bishops, we are taught that we are responsible to act in line with our informed conscience.
What are we to do when changes in the civic culture, of which we also are a part, cause us to experience conflict between the two?
Some will turn solely to authority, relying on the teaching that they are given. It is a reliable guide but it is also true, as Father Tetlow cites from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, that “the education of the conscience is a lifelong task” given to each of us by the Church and only this ongoing education “guarantees freedom and engenders peace of heart.”
More often in our times, especially when Church teachings seem hurtful, persons will feel pressured to reject the teaching of authority. Then there is the danger of mistaking a convinced for a correct conscience.
Is there a resolution to this conundrum?
Father Tetlow looks to the Catechism’s suggestion that we pray toward a “practical discernment of reasons and goods.” Here is the role of discernment, on-going discernment.
Join the gathering this year to pray together, to reflect in silence and to receive the input of Father Joseph Tetlow, who will offer material of substance from Scripture, the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, and Ignatian spirituality.
