Annual Catholic Appeal seeks same $3.7 million

Poster - EnglishJanuary marks the beginning of the Annual Catholic Appeal which funds 26 charities and ministries across the region.
The goal for 2013 is $3.7 million, the same goal for the past four years, said Margie Puerta Edson, executive director of the Diocese’s Catholic Foundation. More than $3.3 million had been raised this year, as of press time.
“I am inspired and grateful to all those who have supported the Annual Catholic Appeal, which makes it possible to carry on the mission of the Church in our community,” said Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas. “Without the help of so many people, our efforts to serve those in need would be greatly limited. I know this year, together in Christ, we will reach and even exceed our goal.”
Among the programs funded through the Appeal campaign are:
-Catholic Community Services: Through six agencies, residents receive medical and dental care, housing for low-income seniors and homeless families, shelter for victims of domestic violence and counseling services, among other programs.
-Office of Catholic Schools: More than 6,600 students at 26 elementary and secondary schools benefit from development of Christian formation, curriculum and administrative policy and personnel.
-Parish Aid: An emergency fund for those parishes and missions most in need, including a Priest Salary Subsidy for parishes that would otherwise be without a resident priest.
-Office of Vocations and Seminarian Education: The Appeal currently supports 13 men attending seminary.
-Pastoral Services: More than 18,200 children, youth and young adults participate in formation annually, officials said. Hispanic Ministry is also served through this office.
-Office of Human Life and Dignity: This office promotes the dignity of human life from conception through natural death.
Leadership training meetings to prepare Diocesan pastors and their Appeal program volunteers for the upcoming campaign will continue this month.  The next trainings scheduled include:
Jan. 8 at Our Lady of the Mountains Parish in Sierra Vista for the Cochise Vicariate.
Jan. 10 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish in Miami for the Gila-Pinal East Vicariate.
Jan. 14 at Yuma Catholic High School for the Yuma-La Paz Vicariate.
Jan. 17 at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Safford for the Graham-Greenlee Vicariate.
A video that features people from throughout the Diocese giving a faith witness about how they have been helped by the Appeal is to be shown at parishes on Feb. 9 and 10.
