“Today more than ever we need to highlight fidelity in marriage and the blessings of a good marriage,” said Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas after presiding at the Diocese’s sixth annual Celebration of Marriage Mass last month at St. Augustine Cathedral in Tucson.
The Bishop led 207 couples in the renewal of their wedding vows, including Mr. and Mrs. Robert Betchel of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Sierra Vista, who’ve been married for 66 years.
Six couples celebrated 65 years of married life:
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Annesse of Our Lady of the Valley Parish, Green Valley; Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Coronado of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Safford; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Medina of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Tucson; Mr. and Mrs. Marty Ronstadt of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Tucson; Mr. and Mrs. Jesus Yanez of St. Ambrose Parish, Tucson, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Yenter of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Casa Grande.
Another 80 couples celebrated 50 years of marriage, and 78 couples celebrated 25 years together. A few couples were celebrating their first anniversaries.
“It was truly a joyful experience to watch as all the couples turn smiling to face one another and to reaffirm their commitment,” Bishop Kicanas said.
The Bishop said on the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ website, www.usccb.org, there is a section on strengthening marriage on which couples are asked, “What have you done for your marriage today?”
Said the Bishop: “Simple acts of love and expressions of affection can mean so much.”
